The purpose of the graduate program is to gain a thorough understanding of chemistry necessary to lead the scientific society of the 21st century. Our students are creative, professional, and capable of advancing science technology. They gain knowledge in a systematic manner and apply their research in the fields of education, industry, and society at large.
The primary focus of the graduate program is research. Students choose faculty advisors and begin active research within their first year of study. Our faculty provide guidance and training in the use of the tools of chemistry through their solid commitment to scientific inquiry at the molecular level. Furthermore, the department strives to provide as many opportunities for interdisciplinary study as possible.
Original research under the direction of a faculty advisor is a major aspect of the Doctor of Philosophy degree granted by Sookmyung and the Department of Chemistry. The transition from student to professional takes place through the development of research skills, critical judgment, originality, and independence, all of which are gained through participation in original thesis research.
